Web Site Promotion

How do Webmasters Promote Their Web Sites?

Website promotion is hard work, but is certainly well worth the effort. Some Webmasters have offered a lot of valuable advice. Let us see what they have to say:

Rebecca Game (Digital women):

“How to increase web site traffic? There is no “magic formula”. It took almost two years of hard and very dedicated work. The contributing factors were:

  • Contests (3 MAJOR contests)
  • Award Programs
  • Mail list
  • Offering some kind of interaction at your site where visitors could participate in something
  • Emails sent to announcement lists, search engines and directories
  • TONS of content
  • Tons of articles
  • Free stuff to give away
  • JOINING every email list you could find that related to your web audience and participating in those discussions
  • A BUNCH of trial and error stuff! Too many to laugh at!
  • Getting others involved with your web site with you by helping to promote them

This was all an effort of love and devotion to wanting to succeed. I had so many “failed” programs that didn’t work out, and I didn’t waste time trying to get them to work either. I just moved on to the next item on my list and kept plugging away.”

Tawnya Reilly (Award website, Mall of treasures):

“Several people have asked me how I have managed to get so many hits to my site so I thought I would give you some ideas.

  • First:
I edited meta tags and submitted my site again to the search engines. It had been a while since I had done that.
  • Second:
I purchased a web decal, online, that has my full business name and URL on it, and placed it on the windows of my car
  • Third:
I passed out flyers in my town and spoke to business people about my site. I even went door to door at business districts, schools and churches.
  • Fourth:
I concentrated on getting listed online in places where I knew people would look for my products. Freelance sites, web design sites, mall links, shopping links, exchanged links with man on mailing lists.
  • Fifth:
I concentrated on attending business chats online to see what was working for others and share my ideas. I really learned a lot of valuable information there.
  • Sixth:
I connected with some other malls online and asked if they would mind providing a link to my site and if there was anything I could do in exchange for the link.
  • Seventh:
I passed out business cards everywhere I went: grocery store, bank, paying bills. I even sent my business card with my bills I was paying.
  • Eighth:
I gave away my products! I gave my products and or services away to contests and charities in my town and on the net.
  • Ninth:
I interacted on ZDTV, which is online, and they have tons of information there. They also allow you to submit your site to be reviewed to be on TV.

Basically I lived, ate, and breathed my site. I told anyone and everyone I could think of. I even talked to relatives about how many hits I was getting to spark their interest.

The month is not over yet and the statistics are still rising! You too can do the same thing. Use my ideas and get out there and plug your site anyway you can!”

Denise O’Berry (Whats Possible ):

Here are some low cost / no cost ideas for getting the word out about your business:

  • Network, network, and network: online and offline. When you’re networking, do it with a listening ear instead of a selling mouth. The key thing to remember is “people do business with people”
  • Speak to groups and organizations
  • Serve on an association or committee board of directors
  • Write tips and articles for local newspapers
  • Define your perfect prospect and make sure all of your close contacts know one when they see one.
  • Ask current clients for referrals
  • Publish a newsletter (email makes this easy and cost effective)
  • Team up with a complementary business and cross refer to each other
