Do you want to create or write an ecourse?

Here’s a little secret: If you start off by choosing the right topic, you are on your way to creating a winner. Let’s find out how to choose the topic and how to research on it.

1. Choose topic

Write on a subject in which you have a great deal of knowledge. It should also interest your target audience and be related to the product you are trying to sell.

For example, if you sell dog food with vitamin A, you can write an ecourse explaining why vitamin A is important for dogs. This subject will be of interest to dog owners and will also promote your product.

People like information on solving problems they face in their daily lives. Your course can identify a problem, discuss possible solutions and then show how the proposed solution can be implemented by using your products or services.

Examples of problem solving content
You sell handmade soaps for sensitive skin. In your ecourse, you can start off by discussing the problems that people with sensitive skin face, and then talk about ingredients which are good for sensitive skin. Then you can talk about how these ingredients have been used in your soaps.

If your products are decorative (candles, jewelry etc.) and don’t solve any problems, you can create ecourses on explaining how these products are made.

The list of such examples can be endless. The key is to know what information will interest your customers and relate to your product. People generally look for information about:

How to create something
How to make money
How to save time
Self-improvement
How to lead better lives
How to improve relations

2. Research

After choosing the topic you would like to write on, try to research on it. The research can be for two types of information:

The views of your target audience on the subject
The best way to ensure that your ecourse is of interest to your customers is to pay attention to their views on the subject before your start writing on it. You can find their views in the following ways:

1. Communicate with your customers. Ask them questions and listen to what they have to say about your product and your chosen subject.
2. Conduct an online survey or ask your website visitors for comments.
3. Read messages on message boards, chat rooms and discussion lists.

Current information available on the subject
Conducting a research about related information will give you an idea of what has already been written on the subject. It will also give you information you may not already be aware of. You will become more knowledgeable and your ecourse will become more informative. You will be able to write on the subject with more authority.

This research can be conducted through the following:
Search Engines
Ezines
Portals
Article announcement lists
Ebooks
Books

Now that you have chosen your subject and researched on it you are ready to create an ecourse.

Are you wondering if email marketing can help you make more money? Research shows that email marketing (if done the right way) can be very helpful in convincing people to order or spend more money on your website.

Build a subscriber list

The best way to make money from email marketing is to create your own list and send them well written emails on a regular basis. This requires more effort as compared to buying an email list but gives much better results.

Place a subscribe form on every page of your website and offer a subscription incentive. If you can’t offer free gifts, give them a clearly stated benefit for subscribing, for example: “Join to receive subscriber only special deals”.

Follow up with prospects

Create a sequence of email messages which aim to convince your reader to buy. It is important to keep reminding your prospects about your offer so that they don’t forget about you. This is called following up with prospects. If you have a follow up system in place, it will help you in raising conversion rates and making more money.

What is a follow up system?

This system sends marketing emails to your subscribers, at intervals specified by you. As it is automated, you don’t have to worry about sending emails manually. Just set up your email marketing messages and place a subscribe form in your website, and it will take care of the rest. This type of system is popularly known as a follow up autoresponder system. (Ecourse Wizard is a user friendly autoresponder system with prices starting from only $2 per month.)

Give an irresistible offer

Once people subscribe, it is important to keep their interest alive by offering good content. Also, your message sequence must convince subscribers to take action. Time limited offers work well to convince people to act now. Here are some ideas:
1. Offer a free gift with every order
2. Offer discounts
3. Offer free consultation and support

Special offers can also be used to convince people to spend more money. This is helpful if you are selling multiple products/services. Here are some ideas:
1. Offer discounts when people buy two or more products
2. Offer free shipping on a minimum order amount
3. Offer free gift on a minimum order amount

Let email marketing convert subscribers to paying customers

Using a follow up autoresponder system ensures that you stay in touch with your subscribers. When they receive messages from you on a regular basis, there is a greater chance that they will be convinced to buy from you. Constant email reminders coupled with irresistible offers are a combination which is guaranteed to make you more money.

Appearing credible on the web is a challenge. However, it has been observed that credibility can be built through the appearance and content of a web site. Following are some useful tips in this regard:

Professional Web Site

Both content and design play a huge part on the overall appearance and impression of the web site. While designing your web site, it is important to pay attention to layout, navigation and usability issues. Design your website according to the purpose or goals you have in mind for it.

Suggestion: More on your web site’s purpose here.
More on planning for web design here.

Useful and Informative Web Content

It is important to provide informative and useful content in your website to enhance its credibility. This will also get you more exposure from the search engines. Also, try to sound clear and sincere in your web content and avoid errors by re-checking and proof reading.

Suggestion: Create an article section in your website and upload articles related to the theme of your website.

Credible Promotional Content

Intrusive advertisements like pop ups, animated banners and flash movies should generally be avoided. It is recommended that you promote your products/services while sounding informative.

Suggestion: Talk about what you can deliver and stress on real benefits versus empty promises.

Highlight your expertise

Are you affiliated with a respected organization or have certifications related to your profession? If so, clearly state this in the content of your web site.

Suggestion: Display the button of the affiliation throughout the website and mention it in the content of about us and/or home page.

Include customer references

If you are a product based business it will be a good idea to include testimonials of customers who have bought your products. If you are a service based business you can include a portfolio page or case studies about your customers. Knowing that you have an existing customer base will make it easier for your web site visitors to trust you.

Suggestion: Create a “testimonials” or “case studies” page linking to your service page or main menu.

Give contact/profile information

Make your contact information easily available. If possible, give details about your staff/ management team along with their photographs. People like knowing who they are doing business with.

Suggestion: Your website should have separate pages for about us and contact information linked through the main menu.

Consistently update your web site content

Updating and reviewing your web site content often will ensure that it does not include outdated, inaccurate and erroneous information. All of these can have a negative impact on the credibility of your web site.

Suggestion: Blogging software has made updating content very easy. Take a look at Word Press.

If you are a Webmaster, you must have wondered about this question, especially if you are too busy to publish an ezine. After all, what is so great about publishing something that no one pays for, and which usually gets deleted without being read? Here, a few webmasters discuss their experiences with us.

Webmaster:

I disagree about a newsletter being essential. It couldn’t hurt but people are being inundated with ezines and newsletters, and most people AUTOMATICALLY delete newsletters without even opening them.

BizTalk:

I agree that most newsletters are deleted without being read. But perhaps, that has something to do with those newsletters themselves. Maybe they are too boring or too long or too frequent. How many times have you read each and every article of a magazine you bought? Ezines are the same and only worse because they are free.

Webmaster:

So, why publish them? Isn’t it simply a waste of time?

BizTalk:

Hardly. It’s up to ezine publishers to make their ezines inviting to the reader. Ezines, which are being read by their subscribers, are highly popular, and their publishers enjoy a lot of benefits.

As a webmaster, your biggest concern should be to encourage repeat visits from your website visitors. Most people don’t buy the first time they visit a website. The only way you can do this is by capturing their email addresses, and sending them occasional reminders.

Webmaster:

But I have no idea how to go about publishing an ezine. Besides I get little spare time from running my web business.

BizTalk:

Publishing an ezine is not such a difficult task. Moreover, if you feel that you are too busy, you can have an update/announcements list, instead of a full-fledged ezine. Once you get the hang of it you can graduate in to full-fledged ezine publishing.

Simple update list is easier to maintain and, you would only be sending messages to people, when you have to announce something about your business like new products, website updates, contests, special offers etc. This sort of mailing list would increase the chance of repeat sales with current customers and remind your prospects of your existence.

Ezines contain more general information, which might be related but not specific to your business, like articles that are of interest to your target market. This ezine would be published at regular intervals, and would take more time and effort to maintain.

Putting out an interesting and informative ezine is hard work and requires commitment, and not everyone can do it, or would want to do it. But everyone can definitely have an updates/ announcement list on his or her website. It is essential because you need to capture email addresses through it.

Webmaster:

Ok, so I can have an announcements list to capture email addresses and remind people of my business. Why would I want to graduate to a full-fledged ezine later on

BizTalk:

There are many advantages of having a full-fledged ezine:

If you have an ezine which has information of general interest (ie not limited to info about your products) you have a chance of promoting it extensively, and would gain general subscribers, which can later turn into prospects for your business.

You can list it in ezine directories. This would automatically increase your link popularity and boost your search engine rankings.

If you archive the ezine issues with informative articles on your website, your website would constantly be updated with useful information and would get content rich pages. This would give you more search engine exposure and interest your visitors. Many a times people have come across my website because they were searching for a keyword related to some article I have written and uploaded on my website.

Unlike an announcement list, it would be published at regular intervals and would remind your subscribers regularly about your business.

It would help you in building a long lasting relationship of trust and confidence with your website visitors.

You can earn extra revenue from running ads in this ezine.

Webmaster:

Ok, people might read the information in my ezine. But would they really read the ads that I have included? I mean, does ezine advertising work?

BizTalk:

It definitely works compared to all the other forms of Internet advertising. And it is also cheaper than most methods of offline advertising. The response rate is quoted as 2-3%, which is one of the highest, when it comes to online advertising response rates.

Just to give you an idea of the real picture, here are two ezine publishing webmasters, sharing their experiences:

We asked Nancy Cowan of The Ship’s Store about whether an ezine has benefited her business.

Nancy Cowan:

I doubted the worthiness of newsletters for ages. Then, I decided to one for fun. I love contests so I made sure I had lots of contests and freebies as well as very few ads. I don’t normally read them so why include them?

I have to say our newsletter is now a huge success. We currently have over 8500 subs and our sales this year are already just about what our entire gross sales for 2001 were.

So, do newsletters work? YES but only if you can keep your readers interested. Give them what they are looking for. Don’t glog up with ads. I have yet to get a referral or sale due to an ad in a newsletter. In my opinion, get them to your site and if they like what they see they will come back.

I get most of my sales from: customers that entered our contests, site referrals, and returns to check out the new arrivals. Did my customers order the first time they entered our contest? NO. It took time. Quite often people will wait to see if you are still there in a year. With all the fraud these days, I’m leery of placing an order with someone that is “new” because I don’t know if they are going to be there to send my order. Once I get to “know” a person, such as on a list, that’s different. ”

We asked Shannon Jarvies of A Mom’s Joy about whether ezine advertising works.

Shannon Jarvies:

I’d have to say yes! I’ve been publishing for two years and have just in the last month started being serious about accepting paid advertisers. Now that I have done this, it has been the most successful thing I have done online.

I offer contests in my newsletters, fresh articles I’ve written and links back to my site to more articles and recipes. The contests are popular. And the recent advertisers I’ve had say they are getting a good response.

My goal is to “lock in” my ad prices even though my subscribership is growing. I feel I will be successful in this because I’m offering something valuable at a reasonable cost. I hope to help other moms in their home based businesses by doing this.

Hence, if you are a Webmaster without a website mailing list or ezine, maybe its time to start one. Once you do, you won’t regret it.

Are you an aspiring or new ezine publisher? Do you keep wondering how you can possibly increase your subscriber base? Have you spent hours submitting to ezine directories with no results? Don’t worry because there are ways in which you can build your subscriber base with little effort and guaranteed results.

In this article we will explore free and easy methods of building a subscriber base. So if you were afraid to start an ezine because you didn’t know how to promote it, don’t worry any more. Just try the resources that this article suggests:

1) Free Ads for Subscribers

If you are willing to offer one ad to every subscriber who joins your ezine, you can grow your subscriber base manifolds in a short time. If you have a start-up ezine, chances are that you will have a lot of advertising space available in your ezine. This can be used effectively to gain more subscribers.

All you have to do is join a few ezine co-op programs. These programs offer ezine advertising for a very low rate to clients. In exchange, the advertisers must join all the ezines that run their ads.

When someone orders an ad through an ezine co-op, you will be forwarded their email address and ad. You can directly add the email address to your ezine and run the ad.

This method will definitely deliver subscribers to you. Depending on the number and popularity of the co-ops you join, you can add up to 50 or more subscribers to your ezine in a month!!

You may worry that these subscribers will leave after you run their ad in your ezine. The truth is that it is entirely up to you to get these people hooked up to your ezine. If you continue to provide useful information and good offers, the chances are high that they will stay.

Visit the following link for a full list of ezine co-ops: List of Co-ops.
Most of the co-ops approve the ezines manually, so make sure that you join as many as possible.

2) Pop Ups

Another method, which is becoming very popular, is popup subscription windows. These pop ups contain a list of ezines with a four or five word description of each ezine and ask your site visitor to subscribe.

When you join the program you are given a code of the popup window. You place the code of the popup on the page on which you want it to be seen. Every time a visitor exits this page, the window is displayed on it and you earn four exposures in the system. This means that the sites of all the participating members will be advertising your ezine. This will definitely help you get more subscribers.

Most pop up programs charge a high fee for membership. The following popup subscription groups are free to join:

Subscriber Drive

3) Ezine Directories

Another method is submitting to ezine directories. There are people out there who are looking for information on specific topics. If the topic of your ezine interests them, they will subscribe to it. To make it easy for them to find you, you need to be listed in various ezine directories. Moreover, getting your website listed in these directories will increase your link popularity. This will lead to higher search engine rankings which is an invaluable benefit.

List of Ezine Directories

Submitting to Ezine Directories

4) Ad Swaps

This method is not so new, but is easy and free to use. You exchange ads with other ezine publishers to promote your ezine. Make sure to carefully write your ad so that it gets a good response. Also, be prepared to run the ad of ezines with a higher subscriber base several times.

You can join the following lists to find ezines who will swap ads with you:

Swap Ezine Ads

For All Ezine Publishers

Announce a List

Ezine Announce

Most of these methods are free, easy to employ and get results. If you have a low number of subscribers, make sure you try out each of the methods listed above. The results you get will depend entirely on the effort you are willing to make. Remember, once you have a large and loyal subscriber base, you can reap the enormous benefits that come with having a reputable ezine.

One of the most popular ways of promoting an ezine is submitting it to ezine directories. When you submit your ezine to directories you ensure that potential subscribers and advertisers can find you.

Submitting to ezine directories is hard work and requires a lot of time and effort. It is advisable to have all the required information ready before you begin the submission process. Following is the information usually required by most Ezine Directories during the submission process.

Category:

To submit to ezine directories you need to know the exact category in which your ezine fits. Submissions are evaluated and listed according to categories in most directories.

Description:

Most ezine directories would require a description of your ezine. It is advisable to keep this description short as most directories would not accept a description that is too long. Try to keep the description to a maximum of 100 characters.

While writing the description, try to avoid over-hyped words like “the best in the world” and “the most amazing”. The reviewers of the directories usually regard such descriptions with disapproval. Instead, try to focus on the type of information your ezine offers and how the information would benefit the readers.

Write and rewrite the description so that it sounds crisp and well written. It would also be better to write it as if a third party is reviewing it. This would enhance the credibility of the description, and it would sound more authentic.

Key words:

It would be a good idea to come up with 10 to 15 key words related to your ezine to assist potential subscribers in searching for your ezine.

Ad rates:

Your ad rates would depend entirely on the amount of subscribers you have. It is not uncommon for ezines with 1000 subscribers to offer advertising at $2 an ad.

Typically there are four types of ezine ads: Top ad, Middle ad, Bottom Ad, Solo Ad

Top ad is placed at the top most position in the ezine and is the most expensive.

Middle ad comes in the middle of the ezine and is priced lower than the top ad.

Bottom ad is placed right at the bottom and is priced the lowest.

Solo ad is a separate mailing done to your list of subscribers with quite a long letter type ad. It would be priced the highest as compared to the ads that appear in the ezine. Not all ezines have a policy of accepting and running solo ads. If you decide to accept solo ads do try not to send out too many of them as it may upset your subscribers. After all they have subscribed to receive information in the form of your ezine and not blatant advertising.

Ad guidelines:

A lot of ezine directories, which target at potential advertisers, would ask for detailed information about your advertising requirements. You might be required to give guidelines about the kind of ads you would accept for your ezine. For example you may have a policy of not accepting ads that depict offensive or pornographic material. You may also have a maximum word limit for ads.

Article submissions:

A lot of article writers also search ezine directories for ezines that accept articles. If you want free content emailed to you, you may want to state clearly that you accept article submissions. You would also need to give the email at which articles should be sent to you.

Tip: You may want to create a form on your web site for the purpose of accepting article submissions. This would increase the traffic of your web site and also enable you to check that the submissions is according to your requirements (by inserting validation codes in the form).

Article Submission Guide Lines:

You may ask for a specific format (text or word file) of articles and you may also specify a maximum or minimum word limit.

Tip: To increase your subscriber base you may state that you would only publish articles of your subscribers. In this way people who want o have their articles published in your ezine would first subscribe and then submit their articles.

Circulation:

This is the number of subscribers your ezine goes out to. The higher your subscriber base the more the advertisers would be willing to pay to advertise in your ezine. Some ezine directories do not list ezines, which have a subscriber base of less than 1000.

Archived issues:

A few reputable ezine directories strictly require that the archives of your ezine are present to accept your ezine listing. Hence it would be a good idea to start submitting to ezine directories when one or two issues of your ezine have already been published.

Publishing frequency:

How often is your ezine published? Possible publishing frequencies are daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, bi-monthly etc.

URL:

The URL of your web site should be written in the following format: http://www.yoursite.com .If you archive your ezine on your web site, it would be better to give that URL here.

Subscribe address or URL:

Give the complete subscribe address or URL with your submission.

Contact email:

Give your contact name and email. Make sure that the email address is active and regularly accessed by you. Some ezine directories reject ezines submitted with invaild email addresses.

This summarises the information required by most ezine directories. If you prepare this information before directory submissions, your task would become comparatively easier and you would save time and effort.

Following is a list of ezine directories you can submit to:

If you have spent even a little time learning about internet marketing, you will be aware that writing ezine articles is the best way of promoting your business on the net. It gives you credibility, puts you in the limelight and gives you an opportunity to promote your business for free to your target audience.

But the question is, how does one go about writing an ezine article that will result in free publicity? Follow a few simple rules and you will be able to write great ezine articles, which will be accepted for publication by ezines.

1. Choose topic

Choose a topic that interests your target audience and is related to the product you are trying to sell. For example, if you sell dog food with vitamin A, you can write an article explaining why vitamin A is important for dogs. This article will be of interest to dog owners and will also promote you product.

2. Research

Once you have chosen the topic you would like to write on, try to research on it. This will give you an idea of what has already been written on the subject. It will also give you information you may not be already aware of. You will become more knowledgeable and your article will become more informative. You will be able to write on the subject with more authority. The most convenient way to research is going to a search engine (Google is the most favourite) and typing in your chosen topic. Other search venues are forums, discussion lists and portals.

3. Write

Once you have collected relevant information on the subject, it is time to write the article. Decide which points you will be emphasizing on in the article and make a list of those points. Then, elaborate on each point. At this stage you don’t need to bother about editing or correcting any mistakes that you might be making.

4. Structure

Once you have written the initial draft, it is time to organize the article. An ezine article contains four major parts: introduction, body, conclusion and resource box. Introduction is a paragraph introducing the reader to the subject. Body contains the main information and conclusion summarizes the discussion done in the body. Resource box is where information about the writer is provided. This will be the source of free publicity for you if your article is published.

5. Content

The body will contain all the point that you wish to emphasize. Divide the body into short paragraphs. Each paragraph should emphasize a separate point. It will be helpful to give headings to each point. This will give your article an organized appearance, and make it easier and interesting to read.

6. Editing

Once you have organized your initial draft, you should edit and revise it further. Read and re read to correct grammatical and spelling mistakes. Try to improve your sentence structure. Keep your sentences short, and your language simple. Try to shorten the article as much as possible. People get bored of reading very lengthy sentences and paragraphs. Reading the article aloud to yourself will help you in editing it further.

7. Formatting

Once the article has been written, it should be formatted properly. Text only format works best for ezines. It will be a good idea to go over article submission guidelines of the ezines you are targeting, to get an idea of the formatting guidelines that you should follow. A free web based utility for formatting text is: Format It

8. Submitting

Submit the article to ezines that publish articles on topics similar to yours. Write an email with the subject “article submission”. Introduce yourself and give a little information about the article. You can also include conditions for publishing the article in the introduction. Then include the whole article along with your by-line or resource box.

Writing articles is not an easy task, and it will require practice and patience to master the art. Follow the above guidelines and you will be on your way to writing amazing articles. Here are further resources, which provide very useful guidelines for writing and editing articles.

Advertising, whether online or offline, is only effective if it can get the required response from its target audience. Otherwise, it would turn out to be a waste of time, money and effort.

Ezine advertising is considered one of the most effective ways of online advertising. However, you must have a well written ad to get the required response from ezine advertising. If you go through the following process, your ezine ads are bound to become more compelling and get more response.

1) Identify Your Target Audience

First of all, you need to determine the audience you want to target with your ad. Unless you have a clear idea of whom you are writing for, you can never come up with effective ad copy. Everyone in the world might be able to buy your product, but there are only some people who have an actual need for it. These are the people whom you should be targeting.

It would help if you realize that your target audience depends on the product you are selling. For example:

If you are selling a business opportunity, you are targeting business people.

If you are selling expensively furnished apartments, you are targeting families with a high level of income, living in a certain city.

If you are selling dog food, you are targeting dog owners.

If you are selling expensive leather adventure boots, you are targeting young adventurous males with a high income.

Keep the profile of your typical customer in mind when writing the ad. Write as if you are addressing that single person. This would help in giving your ad a personal tone and would increase its effectiveness. The reader should feel as if this ad was written specifically for him/her. This would make them pay attention to your ad.

2) Arouse Their Interest

Once your target audience has been identified, you need to come up with an offer that would interest them. For this purpose, you must understand exactly what their needs are, or identify the problems for which they want solutions.

Sometimes you would know instinctively what your customers want. At other times, you might have to carry out a bit of research. Asking your current customers is always helpful. In fact, at times they would tell you what they want without asking. All you have to do is listen and listen carefully. Business owners, who understand their customers’ needs well, can never fail.

Let’s take the above examples again and look at the needs of the target audiences we identified:

Business people typically want to make or save money.

Rich families looking for apartments would want luxury and convenience, along with saving time and effort.

Dog owners would want happy and healthy dogs.

Rich adventurous men would be most interested in high quality boots that look and feel good.

Now that you know what their needs are, you need to communicate clearly through your ad, how your offering can fulfill their needs and solve their problems.

3) Focus on Benefits

People don’t buy products; they buy benefits that those products are offering. Successful ad copy always focuses on benefits. It is necessary to stress on benefits for the purpose of making them desire your product. They should believe that your product would fulfill their needs or solve their problems. Tell them how your offering can benefit them and do so clearly.

The benefits of your offering are derived from the features of your products. Let us look at some examples to clarify this:

Feature Benefit

A sound business opportunity would help them make money.

Nutritious dog food would keep their dog healthy.

Well furnished apartments would give them luxury.

Sturdy boots would enable them to go for the wildest adventure.

Once you have identified the most compelling benefit of your product, center your ad around that benefit and make your product sound desirable. The headline of your ad would either mention the identified problem or be a combination of both the identified problem and the product benefit. If you are able to come up with the right headline, you would definitely capture their interest. Only then would the reader be compelled to act and would want to own your product. For example:

Earn money from a reliable program.

Live in luxury forever.

The second line of the ad should explain the claim made in the headline. For example:

Do freelance work on your PC

Our apartments are at premium locations and well furnished.

Our dog food contains all the essential nutrients for your dog’s health.

4) Ask for Response

The purpose of all types of advertising is to elicit response from the target audience. Ezine ads are no different. Typically, the purpose of ezine ads should be to make people want more information or contact the seller.

While you are writing the ad, keep the required response of the reader in your mind. After you have written it, read and re-read to ensure that it would achieve the required response.

To motivate your target audience to respond immediately, you can make special offers that are time sensitive. Good examples of special offers for ezine ads can be:

A freebie for a limited time with purchase of advertised product

A generous discount or special low price of the product for a limited time.

Depending on your product and your target audience, you can come up with all sorts of creative ideas for special offers that would compel the readers of your ezine ad to take action.

Moreover, you must clearly ask them and motivate them to take action. Don’t assume that they would do it themselves. Without a call for action, your ad is incomplete; and at times could be entirely useless. For example:

Order Now!

Call Now!

Contact now!

It is also important to include some form of contact information in the ezine ad, so that your prospects can get in touch, or get more information. You must mention the URL of your website and your email address . You may also include your phone number. If you don’t have a website, you should set up an autoresponder message with details of your offering and mention the autoresponder address in the ad.

5) Format the Ad

While writing an ezine ad may sound similar to any other type of copywriting, there is one major difference. Ezine ads have some specific formatting requirements. If these requirements are not followed, your ezine ad would lose its effectiveness. Following are the formatting considerations that should be kept in mind.

Text only
The ezine ad must be in text only format, because this is the format most ezines support. This means that you would have to do without special effects like colours or graphics, which are commonly used in other types of advertising. It would be helpful to write your ad in a text editor (like Notepad in windows), so that you know the exact limitations you are working with.

Character count
Not only are most ezines in text format, they are also line wrapped at a maximum of 65 characters per line. To ensure that your ezine ad doesn’t get irregular breaks, you must limit each line length of your ad to 65 characters as well. In fact, it would be even better to limit the length to 60 characters.

Since text editors have very limited formatting options, you would need to manually limit the character count of each line. This can be done my making a ruler and pasting it on top of the document in which you are writing your ad. This is how the ruler should look for 60 characters:
1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789
01234567890
Type in your ad, and when the text reaches the end of the ruler, press “enter”. This would limit each of your lines to 60 characters or less, and give your ad a clean and professional appearance when it is published in the ezine.

Number of lines
Ezines have limited space for ads and hence your ad must be as short as possible. Most ezines allow a maximum of 6 lines for ads. Others would only accept classifieds that are two to three lines long. Therefore, it is advisable to make your ad as short as possible. It definitely should not exceed 6 lines, but the shorter it is, the better.

Also, the language used in your ad should be simple. Use simple words and short sentences. Write and rewrite your ad again and again, until it is concise, and the copy sounds crisp and clear.

Click able links
You would also be including contact information in the form of website URLs and email addresses. Make their links click able so that it is easy for your readers to contact you. Most of them might not bother to cut and paste information in their browsers, and the purpose of your ad would not be achieved. For website URLs this can be done in the following way:
http://www.yoursite.com. Remember to add the http:// part, otherwise the URL would not be click able. For email addresses just add mailto: to your email address. For example:
mailto:me@mydomain.com

(More tips on text only formatting)

These are the five steps that would enable you to develop an ezine ad, which compels your target audience to take action. Follow each step carefully, and you will reap the rewards.

Submitting your web site to search engines is the most important part of web promotion. You cannot afford to ignore search engines if you are serious about your Internet Marketing efforts. The following tips may make search engine submissions easier and more rewarding.

1. Target the Right Keywords

The first step is to determine the keywords that you want to target and prepare meta tags from them. Think of general words related to your business and make a list of them. Now you need to check if people are actually searching these keywords. Two very useful resources for checking searched keywords are:

Goto Search Suggestion Tool
This is the search suggestion page of Goto.com. Type in your chosen keyword and it would generate a list of similar keywords and how many hits each of them got.

Word Tracker
This is by far the best key word suggestion tool on the net. Not only would it generate a list of qualified and popular keywords similar to your keywords, it would also give you an analysis of the competition that each of these keywords face.

The best way to go about this process would be to get a list of popular and related keywords from the Goto.com suggestion tool and then run them through the free trial offered by Word Tracker to identify keywords that you want to target.

Remember, the more specific a keyword, the lesser competition it would face. And the lesser competition a keyword has, the more chances that you would get higher rankings on it.

After finalizing the list of keywords you want to target, you must create the meta tags for these keywords. Your most important keywords must go in your title tag, along with your description and keyword tags. While the keyword tags are generally longer, the title and description tags are shorter and hence you would have to be comparatively choosy about their content.

Make sure that your most important keywords are also a part of the actual content of your web page, especially the first paragraph, as the search engines would index this, and it would contribute towards your keywords density.

2. Link Popularity

Sites that have their links in other web sites are also ranked highly by search engines. However, the site that has your link must have content similar to yours to give you a higher ranking.

There are many ways to increase your link popularity. You can do a search for your keywords and make a list of sites that rank highly on them. If these sites are not too closely competitive you can write to their webmasters and request a link exchange. You can also join various networking groups and exchange links with their members. Following are some groups dedicated to link exchanging.

3. Learn More About Search Engines

Understanding the way search engines work can be a tricky business. All search engines have different ways of ranking web sites listed within them. Some rank according to meta tags while others totally ignore the meta tags and focus only on the title tag and web page content. To make sense of it all, and to optimise you web pages so that they rank highly on all the important search engines, you may want to check out the following resources.

Search Engine Watch

Search Engines

4. Automated Submissions

To save time you may want to check out the following tools for automated submissions. These tools would instantly submit your web site to some of the most popular search engines in a matter of seconds.

Jim Tools

Self Promotion

5. Required Information

To speed up the submission process you may want to keep the information required by search engines and directories handy. In general, search engines/directories require the following information:

URL

Title of Web site

Email (create a separate email account to submit to search engines to avoid receiving bulk email)

Description (20-25 words)

Keywords (10- 15 words)

You can type all this information in a text file and then simply cut and paste while you are submitting the site. The following software for filling forms would also prove useful.

Typeitin

Roboform

6. Spread Sheets to Track Results

If you want to keep a track of the results of your submission efforts, you can create a spread sheet in MS Excel to help you with the process. The spread sheet may have the following sections listed horizontally:

Name of search engine

URL added

Category added

Date of submission

Date listed

Ranking

Submitting to search engines is a time consuming process and it is important to do it right the first time. This would ensure that you get your fair share of traffic and the rankings that you deserve.
